Day fourteen. Row-4.

The belt is six fragments and a relay chain and open cold between. Burn Arcs out here are minutes long; a Runner leaves a fragment and is a signature for a very long time, and the transit crews are good at signatures. They have had thirteen days of practice. We gave them the thirteen days.

Static holds the jammer on the outer fragment. It has been found twice and abandoned twice and this time it is held, because the crews have learned that when the jammer opens they should go to the jammer, and today we want them to go to the jammer. Twenty seconds. Loud on every band still working. It is meant to be loud. A jammer that could not be heard would not be worth chasing.

Three decoys light on the three fast approaches. They were placed over four nights and they are good decoys, which is to say bad Runners: a little too fast, a little too committed, on lines a transit crew would choose. On day one the sensor operator on Row-4 classified this pattern false in the first window. On day seven she did it again. She has been patient for thirteen days and today she is on the interceptor with a Vector Cannon, because patience is a thing people run out of, and the Collective does not.

Nobody goes now.

Shadow side of the fragment. Below the Break, below every threshold a crew has been taught to watch. No beacon. Nothing on the Runner transmits, including the Runner. The route is the slow one, the one nobody guards because nobody would use it, and the Drive is doing what a Drive does when it is asked to do nothing: holding a body just off the ice, letting it slide.

The tug bay. One rigger inside with a Shard Cannon, who does the right thing and stays. Doctrine says stay. Doctrine is correct. Nobody enters by the other door.

Forty seconds is the physical act. It cannot be done faster and it cannot be done by anyone else, and for forty seconds a Null operator is exactly as slow and exactly as present as anyone. The Core comes out. The alarm is the end of the forty seconds, not the start.

Interceptors return from the jammer's fragment across six kilometres of belt at a speed we admire, to a station whose anchor tug has no coupler.

Nine hours. The fragment leaves the lane.

We do not take ground. The map the enemy is looking at is the weapon and we have no use for the ground under it. The Ascendancy has struck the number: there is no Row-4. They will say we took a Core. We took a Core. The bulletin is eleven words and the eleventh is not the objective.

The Concord will ask what we wanted from Row-4. The Concord finds us unsettling and says so.

We do not comment.
